The Pixel Maze: 0.2
The Pixel Maze: 1-bit Adventure Game » Devlog
This is a bugfix/niceties release based on the play test feedback:
- keys are no more, and so are locked doors. I am banging my head against Pico-8 token limit to make them fun. I guess I will have to wait for a Playdate release to get back to the idea
- as there are no keys, a ghost effect showing a misleading tooltip is also fixed
- added platform ladders, that don’t slow a player down by walking through them
- fixed a zero-state after the credit screen that resets the game and let one play it again
- added a blinking (x) icon for the text for each room, press to skip the animation
- a game timer doesn’t stop on text animations
- once you visit a room, a door will have a crown on top; it is easier to memorize the maze that way
- also, there is a tooltip that tells which room you are entering
- new logo on the title screen, credits to @cadars
- removed the spiral animation, lots of tokens for very little synergy
- under the hood: I put the source code on a diet and did trim about 1k tokens, a little bit more clean up, and I will be ready to publish the source code to Github. In meantime, feel free to reach out to me if you would like to see what's inside
- …and music, I hope you like Grieg!
I think it is getting closer to the final version. Yay?
Next:
- sound effects
- more work on the narrative
- tiny riddles in "boring" rooms
- write up on algorithms & pico-8 development
